Coming to a City park or pooch playground near you…Animal Care Services will host FREE Microchip MANIA clinics throughout the community on the first Friday of each month. Friday, September 4th from 2p.m. to 6p.m., the free clinic comes to Father Roman Community Center at 11030 Ruidosa. Free microchips are available for San Antonio Residents ONLY. Non-San Antonio residents may purchase a microchip for a low-cost of only $5 at the ACS Shelter located at 4710 Highway 151 - not at the Microchip Mania Clinic. No appointments are needed and all pets are welcome but residents should ensure their animal companions are leashed or in an appropriate carrier. Pet owners should look for signage once entering the park which will direct residents to the clinic area.
Animal Care Services implanted microchips include basic lifetime registration and are updateable at any time without charge. The onetime injection is similar to a vaccination and the microchip or “chip” is no bigger than a grain of rice. Local veterinary clinics and shelters (including the City’s ACS) scan animals upon intake with a special handheld device. The pet’s microchip has a unique ID number (similar to a driver’s license number) which can be “read” by this scanner, helping trace the dog or cat back to the owner through their provided contact information.
