SOUTHWEST AIRLINES, AIRTRAN ADDING INTERNATIONAL ROUTES FROM SAT

Southwest announces summer schedule, which includes new AirTran international service to Cancun and Mexico City from SAT.

Currently AirTran has three daily flights out of San Antonio to Atlanta. However, Southwest has a large presence in San Antonio.  Southwest Chief Commercial Officer Bob Jordan said the carrier plans to have its code sharing arrangements with AirTran in place in the first half of next year. That would allow passengers to book tickets on Southwest and then connect to an international flight operated by AirTran.

"In today's economy, we wouldn't be adding the routes if the routes didn't make very strong financial sense," Jordan said, adding that the carrier does not plan on adding aircraft to service the routes.

“ Adding nonstop service to Mexico City and Cancun not only gives our passengers more options when planning their summer vacations but positions San Antonio as a gateway for international travel in and out of Mexico, ” said San Antonio International Airport Aviation Director Frank Miller.

Jordan said the company is looking at other international destinations and feels there is a "lot of opportunity there."

After Southwest receives a single-operating certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration, which it expects in the first quarter, it can begin converting AirTran aircraft into Southwest planes. Eventually, AirTran's international routes will become Southwest routes.

"We are rationalizing the AirTran and Southwest networks together to provide even better service," Jordan said.

Service plans are daily, nonstop service between San Antonio and Mexico City four times weekly, and nonstop service between San Antonio and Cancun.  The routes are subject to government approval, and tickets are not yet for sale.

AIRPORTS ACROSS TEXAS GATHER IN HOUSTON TO PLAN FOR TOMORROW ’ S CHALLENGES

More than a dozen Texas airport executives shared their visions for how to address common issues as the landscape for airports becomes blurred with threats of less funding, airline mergers, a weak economy, the worst drought ever and rising costs to operate aviation facilities.

The combined Texas public commercial airports serve more than 135 million passengers annually with many airports experiencing growth in either passenger and/or cargo service. Yet, resources for airports with recent Federal Aviation Administration partial shutdowns have created additional stress on airports financial sustainability. Airports play a critical role in the economic vitality of cities in Texas and across the country. Federal and state laws and regulations often prevent airports from operating efficiently and undertaking developments.

“ Airports are economic engines, which depend on supportive laws and policies that will allow Texas airports to sustain financial viability and invest in needed infrastructure improvements. We look forward to working closely with federal and state lawmakers and regulators to promote our shared objectives, ” said Jeffrey Fegan, Chief Executive Officer  of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

Among the issues discussed include the need for more flexibility on Passenger Facility Charges and other policy changes that do not cap the ceiling for how high business at Texas airports can climb.

“ If the federal government isn't going to fully fund the nation's needs for airport infrastructure maintenance and improvement, then Congress needs to give local communities the legal authority to do that, so that airports can determine their own futures," said Frank Miller, aviation director of San Antonio International Airport.

Airport construction projects require a long lead time, and key to that advance planning is determining how to pay for those projects, which create jobs and secure the future of airport infrastructure. The funds come in part from bonds issued by airports and cities.

“ Congress needs to permanently reclassify airport bonds to avoid making these bonds more expensive and less attractive to investors. It would help airports become more self-sufficient financially and allow us to fund the kinds of projects that will help kick start our economy," explains Mario Diaz, Director of Houston Airport System.

The airports who participated in the gathering included the two large Texas hubs, George Bush Intercontinental and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport; and
medium Texas commercial airports including, Houston ’ s William P. Hobby Airport, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, San Antonio International Airport, Dallas Love Field, El Paso International Airport; and several other commercial airports.

In coming months, Texas airports will continue to dialogue to determine how to best serve the public and the communities that depend on air service to connect with commerce within the state of Texas, the nation and globally.

SUMMER TRAVEL

Summer brings one of the busiest travel times of the year, with the Memorial Day weekend kicking off the un-official start of summer and the school year winding down, many families travel to and from San Antonio. This time of year the San Antonio International Airport sees an increased number of travelers, which can bring increased length at check-in and TSA security checkpoints.

Summer travel always brings a spike in the total number of passengers at the airport and this year is certainly no different. For flights prior to 7:30 AM, airport officials recommend getting to the airport at least 2 hours prior to your departure, and 90 minutes prior to your flight at other times throughout the day. This will allow enough time to check in with your airline and get through TSA Security check-points.

“ In addition to just an increase in travelers, weather can also cause delays not only in San Antonio, but also in some of the larger hub cities such as Dallas and Houston, “ said Rich Johnson, Public Relations Manager for San Antonio Airport System. “ In these early summer months, business travel winds down and there is an increase in families and children traveling. Families tend to travel with more baggage and equipment, and it can sometimes slow down the check in and security processes. ”

Some other important tips:
- Use online check-in at your airlines website.
- Avoid congestion on upper tier roadway by taking advantage of 30 minutes FREE parking when dropping off passengers.
- When picking up passengers, use the FREE, Wi-Fi equipped cell phone lot at I-410 and Airport Blvd.
-Always check with your airline for flight status prior to leaving for the airport. Information can be found at www.sanantonio-airport.com.

These valuable travel tips, suggestions, notifications when lines are particularly long and other helpful information can be found at www.sanantonio-airport.com as well as on the airports Twitter site at www.twitter.com/saairport and the airport FaceBook site, by searching “ San Antonio International Airport. ”

AIRPORT TO CLOSE ECONOMY PARKING LOT

San Antonio International Airport has announced the closure of the economy parking lot as of September 30, 2010. The closure is part of an overall strategy to restructure the airport parking facilities and make the operation more cost effective.

“ The city ’ s overall 2011 budget included many tough choices, and the airport was not immune to these tough decisions, ” said Frank R. Miller, Director of Aviation. “ This particular parking lot was a 24-hour, seven-day per week operation, regardless of how many customers were using it.  We are confident that our customers will find it more convenient to use the covered long-term parking garage, which is located closer to the terminal complex.  This change will result in no net loss of jobs. ”

With the 2011 budget approval by City Council, airport parking rates also changed and are shown as follows:

With the closure of the economy parking lot, airport officials are offering travelers several tips. With one being, arrive early. With the increased volume of travelers being redirected to other parking facilities, airport customers initially may experience some delays in finding a parking space. Customers can expect an increase in cars utilizing other lots.

There are several ways to relive roadway congestion for yourself, and others at the airport. When picking up passengers, use the free cell phone lot instead of circling the airport. The cell phone lot is located at the corner of Airport Blvd. and Loop 410. Parking at the lot is FREE and also offers FREE Wi-Fi access to the public. Arriving passengers can then call when they have arrived, and simply pick them up curbside in front of the terminal.

If it is necessary to briefly meet someone at baggage claim, you can take advantage the free 15 minute grace period the airport offers in the hourly parking lot. This allows you the time to pick up passengers that may not be familiar with the airport or those passengers who need additional assistance.

AIRPORT FULLY OPENS NEW TWO-TIERED ROADWAY

San Antonio International Airport announces the completion of its new two-tiered roadway system. Opening today are the outer lanes of the lower level. These lanes are designated for shuttle busses, and allow patrons the ability to circle the airport if needed, without congesting the inner lanes closest to the terminals.

The newly opened two-tiered system marks the latest milestone of the airport expansion project. This also marks the 68 percent completion mark for the current expansion project, including the new terminal. The two-tiered roadway system will relieve congestion from the upper- level departure lanes and the lower-level arrival and baggage claim area of the airport.

Along with the opening of the outer lanes of the two-tiered roadway, there will continue to be temporary changes to the lanes closest to the terminal. The inner lanes between Terminals 1&2 will continue to be reduced to 1 or 2 lanes, depending on construction needs, in front of the new Terminal B.

Airport officials are continuing to offer travelers several tips and ideas for travelers to better navigate the airport during construction. As we enter the peak spring and summer travel seasons, airport officials remind travelers to arrive early, at least 90 minutes prior to departure. With the increased volume of travelers during this time of year, there will be an increase in cars, taxis and shuttle buses on the airport roadways. In addition there is an increase in demand for checking luggage at ticket counters and longer lines at the TSA screening check-points.

If it is necessary to meet someone at baggage claim, take advantage of the FREE 30 minutes of parking the airport offers in the hourly parking lot. This allows you the time to pick up passengers that may not be familiar with the airport or those passengers who need additional assistance.

There are several ways to relive congestion for yourself, and others at the airport.

SAN ANTONIO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT GIVEN THE AIR CARGO EXCELLENCE AWARD FROM

AIR CARGO WORLD MAGAZINE

Air Cargo World Magazine recently announced San Antonio International Airport was given the Air Cargo Excellence (ACE) Award, chosen by airline customers that were surveyed by the publication.

The ACE Airport Survey provides ratings from airlines, to airports they serve in key areas of measurement: Performance, Value, Quality of Facilities and Operations. Survey respondents evaluated each airport by rating these four measures with the following criteria:

Performance: Fulfills promises and contractual agreements, dependable, prompt and courteous customer service, allied services-ground handling, trucking, etc.

Value: competitive rates, rates commensurate with service level required, value added programs.

Facilities: Apron, warehousing, perishables center, access to highways and other modes.

Regulatory Operations: Customs, Security

Rather than highlight winners, the survey shows an airport exactly how they are performing against an industry average. This is particularly meaningful as the results provide a standard on which to improve as well as highlighting the areas in need of improvement.

The City of San Antonio Aviation Department, will celebrate a major milestone TODAY at 2:30 PM with a ribbon-cutting ceremony recognizing the completion and opening of the 5,000 foot runway at Stinson Municipal Airport.

The runway extension is part of a $4.4 million, Texas Block Grant from The Texas Department of Transportation.  The improvements included an overlay and extension of Runway 9/27. The runway previously had a length of 4,835 feet, and is now approximately 5,002, making Stinson more appealing for a wider variety of general aviation aircraft, including small corporate jets. Additional improvements include an extension of taxiways, replacement and upgrade of taxiway lighting and navigational aids for both runways, a new engine run-up area for Runway 32 and a helipad.

“ This is a major boost for Stinson Airport, and a major boost for the Southside of San Antonio, ” said Frank R. Miller, Aviation Director. “ The runway extension and other airfield improvements allow Stinson Municipal Airport to host a more diverse, and wide range of general aviation aircraft. It further advances the City ’ s goal of making Stinson the area ’ s premier choice for general aviation. These improvements make Stinson and the Southside an attractive location for corporations and businesses to land and house their aircraft. ”

In the fall of 2008, Stinson Municipal Airport underwent a $4.8 million terminal expansion which included a 24,000 square foot addition to the existing terminal facility.  Stinson Municipal Airport is the general aviation reliever airport for San Antonio International and is the second oldest general aviation airport in continuous operation in the United States.

The ceremony will take place at the Stinson Municipal Airport Terminal Building located at 8535 Mission Road, San Antonio, TX 78214.

500 Homes Completed Under Airport ’ s Acoustical Treatment Program

San Antonio International Airport, along with THC Inc., will celebrate a major milestone TODAY with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting ceremony recognizing the completion of the 500th home under the Airport ’ s “ Acoustical Treatment Program. ”

The program, launched in July of 2006, is designed to make neighborhoods located near the airport more compatible with airport noise by providing acoustical treatments to eligible homes. The treatment involves a variety of noise-mitigating measures, including window and door installations, as well as added insulation. The result is a drop in noise level of at least 5 decibels, comparable to doubling the distance of the aircraft flying overhead.

“ At San Antonio International Airport, we are always striving to be the best in customer service to our passengers, ” said Frank Miller, Aviation Director. “ But, it is also important to be good neighbors; this program speaks to that goal. ”

Funding for the program is the result of a partnership between the airport and the Federal Aviation Administration.  The F.A.A. provides 80% of the necessary funding, while the remaining 20% is provided through the use of airport-generated funds.  No San Antonio tax dollars are used in the funding of this program.

The plan itself will not change any existing zoning or land uses but will be referred to by the Zoning Commission and City Council when considering future request for zoning changes.

The following public notice provides a map showing the outline of the area which has been planned and provides dates, times and places of public meetings designed to solicit your input. Should you have questions on the plan or meetings please call John Osten at (210) 207-2187.
