In order to meet future airport capacity requirements, City the of San Antonio completed a 20-year Airport Master Plan, that was approved by the Federal Aviation Administration in 1998. The Aviation Department, subsequently completed a Noise Study in 2002 in its efforts to mitigate noise impacts on airport neighborhoods. A Land Use Study is currently in process and will assist the City in planning and zoning for future developments near the airport.

These initiatives have now brought the city to the final process before implementing airfield capacity projects. An Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is currently underway to assess the environmental impacts associated with the capacity enhancing runway/taxiway expansion projects. Public involvement is ongoing throughout the project and is considered to be essential to the successful completion of these projects.
Terminal Expansion Program Contracting Schedule

The San Antonio International Airport is currently undergoing major construction work to implement the Roadway and Terminal Expansion Project.    On December 14, 2000, City Council gave the approval to implement this Project, which includes a new Two-Tier Roadway System and Terminal B (eight gates) to replace Terminal 2.  These projects are on schedule for completion April 2010 and November 2010, respectively. This Project also includes demolition of Terminal 2 and new aircraft apron.  The total number of gates, including Terminal 1 (will be designated Terminal A upon completion of Terminal B), will remain at 24.  Demolition of Terminal 2 will allow construction of a new future Terminal C at such time when the City decides additional gates are needed to accommodate passenger growth at the San Antonio International Airport.
