Public Art Display Unveiled on Houston Street Parking Garage
Students from The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) College of Architecture, Construction and Planning (CACP) joined District 1 City Councilman Roberto C. Treviño, the Center City Development & Operations Department (CCDO), the American Institute of Architects (AIA) San Antonio Chapter and Centro San Antonio to unveil a public art installation on the Houston Street Parking Garage located at 240 E. Houston Street.
The UTSA artwork is the second of two student installations displayed as a part of the "Architecture That Engages” design program. Each student design team is responsible for designing, fabricating, installing and dismantling a unique architectural piece that engages the community and showcases architecture as public art. The project is sponsored by the City of San Antonio, the AIA San Antonio Chapter and Centro San Antonio. The first installation, completed by San Antonio College students, was unveiled on the Houston Street Garage in fall 2015.
The project, entitled Morf, is inspired by San Antonio’s progression into a modern, innovative city that keeps true to its heritage. This initiative is part of the City’s ongoing efforts to enhance the downtown parking experience. The project will be on display through fall 2016 on the City-owned Houston Street Garage.
Travis Park is one of the oldest municipal parks in the United States.
Since 1870, the 2.6-acre park has held concerts, hosted community gatherings, and served as a green oasis in the middle of a bustling downtown San Antonio.
Today, the park is an urban destination that embraces its past and yet feels contemporary and dynamic at the same time.
Come and see the new Travis Park!
