“Today’s Express-News reported on the tragic incident which occurred at Chacho’s in February. Marquise Jones was fatally shot by an SAPD officer. While the family has filed a lawsuit based on this incident, I ask all community members for patience in determining all the facts of the case. I spoke with Mr. Jones’ mother and her understanding of the events of that tragic night differed from what Police Chief William McManus conveyed to me. Chief McManus also spoke with the family prior to the lawsuit being filed.
Nationwide, our cities are struggling with tough issues related to young Black men being targeted not just by police, but also by vigilante civilians as well. While we all must be concerned, we cannot jump to conclusions on specific incidents before all the facts are heard and investigations are complete. The pending lawsuit may hinder the availability of information for the general public immediately on this incident, but be assured that I will ensure that SAPD will operate with full transparency and that the appropriate actions will be taken once the District Attorney’s office concludes its investigation.
In accordance with SAPD procedures, the officer involved in the incident is still assigned to administrative duty and will not return to full duty until the case is reviewed by the District Attorney’s office.
Please contact my office with any questions. Thank you.”
