Urban Design in San Antonio
My lifelong passion has been urban regeneration. During my 30+ years of direct urban design experience in both the public and private sector, I have always strived to improve the quality of life in our cities. San Antonio is a special place with a high regard for quality of life based upon our rich cultural heritage and incredible history. As our urban landscape continues to regenerate, there has been a gradual loss of our unique sense of place. New infill buildings begin to look like they could be in any big city. Franchise architecture does not incorporate our local traditions, materials or forms. Great architecture seems out of reach for most projects. Our public realm; the streets, sidewalks and parks fail to achieve greatness.
With a direct recommendation from the Strategic Framework Plan and the continuing support of the City Manager and our City Council, the City of San Antonio has decided to place a higher value on the quality of our built environment. Architects and local developers are very supportive and want to work in a place with a continuing tradition for creating places of enduring value. Urban design is a key element in making places that are successful both socially and economically, good to live in, and attractive to visit. Urban design is essential in protecting San Antonio’s sense of place and economic position. The CityDesignCenter will establish the benchmarks for better design that will protect the form and functions of our most treasured assets.
Through a process of cooperation and collaboration, it is my desire to inspire our design community to raise the bar and to bring a higher standard and value to this place we love so much.
