SAN ANTONIO (May 18, 2017) – In a unanimous vote, Councilwoman Rebecca Viagran, Mayor Ivy Taylor and City Council approved an agreement with Brooks Development Authority for the extension of S. New Braunfels from Lyster Road to Loop 410. The agreement also consists of a new drainage system, bike paths and parks & recreation improvements.
The S. New Braunfels extension will provide a much needed alternative to the existing street system surrounding Brooks City Base (S.E. Military Drive, S. Presa Street, and Goliad Road), as well as greater access to IH-37 and Loop 410 South. The project will also transform 43-acres of underutilized floodplain and drainage channels between S.E. Military Drive and Old Corpus Christi Road into a linear park with ponds, pavillions, lighted walking and biking paths, recreation areas, restroom facilities, parking, public art, and Wi-Fi connectivity. It is expected to be completed in Winter 2018.
Councilwoman Rebecca Viagran emphasized the significance of the agreement by saying, “This demonstrates how we’re working together to be proactive and taking steps that will help mitigate traffic and congestion on the Southside. The agreement will ease our residents’ commute and will provide more accessibility. This a major benefit for our people and exemplifies a new era in District 3.”
