SAN ANTONIO (November 13, 2017) – The City of San Antonio Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission announces Ed Davis as the winner of the third annual citywide contest for the selection of the official artwork for the 2018 City of San Antonio Martin Luther King, Jr. commemoration. The winning artwork, titled “Your African and American History,” will be used on official promotional items to commemorate the 2018 march and artist Ed Davis will receive public recognition as the creator of the 2018 commemoration artwork. Mr. Davis’ winning piece includes a depiction of Dr. King’s March in Selma as well as photos of leaders like Phillis Wheatley, Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, Malcolm X, and W.E.B. Du Bois.
“We are excited to have such unique artwork to celebrate 50 years since the first community march led by Rev. R.A. Callies,” said District 2 Councilman William “Cruz” Shaw, Honorary Chair of the San Antonio Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission. “Artistic expression is so important and talented local artists like Ed Davis play a huge role in expressing the beauty and culture of our city through art.”
“I am very honored to have my work selected for the 2018 MLK celebration,” said Ed Davis, 2018 art contest winner. “It is nice to know that Martin Luther King, Jr. has not been forgotten and is honored for the great sacrifice he made - to make this country and the world a better place for us all, preaching peace, love and unity as one.”
Since 1987, the City of San Antonio has celebrated the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. with an annual series of events leading up to one of the largest Marches in the country honoring the legacy of Dr. King. In 2018, the March will continue in its 31st year as an official City of San Antonio event. The 2018 March and Commemorative Program will take place on Monday, Jan. 15, 2018, Dr. Kings actual birth date!
