SAN ANTONIO (April 10, 2018) — Dog bites continue to be a problem in our community--for our private residents and our postal carriers. Understanding the definite link between owner responsibility, education and prevention, Animal Care Services and the U.S. Postal Services have teamed up to mark National Dog Bite Prevention Week with solution based resources. With the support of the USPS, Animal Care Services has created a number of brief educational videos that discuss basic canine behavior, bite prevention and dog safety tips for walkers and bicyclists.

San Antonio Postmaster Robert Carr says statistics show children and the elderly are the most frequent victims of canine aggression along with postal carriers. “Last year, 6,244 letter carriers were attacked nationwide, 44 in San Antonio,” Carr says. “Many of these attacks came from dogs whose owners regularly used the phrase ‘my dog won’t bite.’” ACS Director Heber Lefgren echoes the need for owner responsibility which he says starts with education. “Knowledge is power when it comes to dog bite prevention,” Lefgren says, “and we hope our education videos help our community become safer for everyone—those with and without pets.”

The new video library is available, without charge, on the ACS website, www.saacs.net under the Resources tab. Titles include “Dog Bite Defense,” “Understanding Dog Body Language,” “Out and About-Staying dog safe while walking,” “Being a good pet parent” and “No Bites S.A.” The new educational resources also include a video rundown of the Dangerous/Aggressive dog laws in our community including legal definitions and investigative process. Animal Care Services will also offer bite prevention tips on the Department’s official Facebook page as well as host a conversation on safety during the ACS Facebook live show, The Dish, which airs this afternoon at 5 p.m.
