The San Antonio River level from W. Nueva St. to S. Alamo St. has been restored to its natural level after being temporarily lowered to accommodate associated San Antonio Water System (SAWS) water and sewer infrastructure updates on S. Alamo Street. Infrastructure being upgraded in the area dates back to 1925, including sewer lines constructed of brick. The temporary lowering of the river was a precautionary measure to relieve pressure on underground bridge pier and flood gate supports surrounding SAWS contractor’s replacement work on pipes running 50 feet below the river.
The utility work being performed by SAWS is in coordination with the City of San Antonio’s S. Alamo Street and Drainage Improvements project on S. Alamo St. from Probandt St. to Pereida St. Infrastructure upgrades will alleviate drainage issues, improve roadway conditions, and enhance pedestrian access to the area. Utility improvements for this project are being completed by SAWS, AT&T, and CPS Energy. The project is on schedule for completion in August 2014 and is within budget.
