Last night in HemisFair Park, San Antonian families were on hand to view "The Adventures of Tintin," the final film in the popular "Movies by Moonlight" summer series. This year, the City moved the screenings from Thursday night to Tuesday night in order to support the City's new Downtown Tuesday initiative, spearheaded by District 1 City Councilman Diego Bernal. This scheduling shift combined with free parking helped bring the total attendance for the 2012 season to a record-breaking 19,595; nearly doubling last year's count of 12,842.
"Movies by Moonlight is a great attribute to the growing Downtown Tuesday program," said Councilman Bernal. "It's about breaking down the barriers that some people may feel when considering coming Downtown. And I'm so pleased that residents from all parts of town are embracing this program."
In an effort to bring more locals Downtown, the program offers free parking from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. at all City-operated parking garages, lots and meters. More than 70 restaurants, bars and hotels in the area have also joined in on the fun by offering exclusive specials and discounts to customers every Tuesday evening beginning at 5 p.m. Since the start of the program in February 2012, the City has seen a 24.7 percent increase in parking customers from the previous year at City-operated garages and lots. In addition, survey data shows that customers are coming from all over the City to enjoy the program.
"We just love Downtown Tuesday and it certainly has brought in a lot of business for us," says Suzanne Wilkinson, Esquire Tavern General Manager. "It's been a nice evolution for the Esquire itself because we are now offering live music and specials on our amazing fried chicken...and people really love it."
Since Downtown Tuesday's inception in February of this year, the initiative has grown tremendously, expanding the number of partnering businesses, and developing a strong following on social media. The initiative's Facebook page has reached almost 900 "likes" and is growing every day.
Next steps for the Downtown Tuesday initiative include a special event with The San Antonio Children's Museum called "Rock the Museum" slated for Sep. 18, 2012, and the launch of a stand-alone website slated for mid-September that will feature each businesses' specials in detail. In addition, Travis Park will feature special jazz programming on Tuesday evenings in September.
