SAN ANTONIO (Aug. 7, 2014)—The San Antonio City Council approved an ordinance today authorizing the withdrawal of City participation in VIA Metropolitan Transit Authority’s streetcar program and the redirection of the $32 million previously authorized for the streetcar program to center city projects to be identified at a later date. The ordinance also establishes the requirement for voter approval before participation in a streetcar or light rail program and provides for the establishment of a Charter Review Commission that will make recommendations for City Charter amendments to be voted on in the May 2015 Municipal Election.
“Today the City Council was responsive to the feedback we received from residents about their desire to weigh in through a public vote on any streetcar or light rail projects proposed for our City. I am eager to begin the process of developing a diverse Charter Review Commission that will vet potential City Charter amendments and gain much-needed community input,” Mayor Ivy R. Taylor said. “I also look forward to working with City staff and our public partners on a comprehensive multi-modal transportation plan that will guide City leaders on future transportation decisions for our community. City Council will continue to work together on these important issues for the City of San Antonio.”
