Councilman Rey Saldaña, in collaboration with CentroMed, will host the annual District 4 Back-to-School Health Fair Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013 from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the CentroMed Clinic located at 9011 Poteet-Jourdanton (Hwy 16). The Back-to-School Health Fair offers immunizations, health and dental screenings, haircuts for children, school supplies and 2,000 backpacks provided by Toyota Texas. All of the services at the fair will be offered at no cost.
In addition to the health fair, this year’s event will feature a book fair component that will offer deeply discounted new as well as gently used children’s books aimed at promoting early interest in reading. The San Antonio Public Library has collaborated with the District 4 office to secure several book vendors including: Texas A&M San Antonio, Barnes and Noble Bookstore, The Twig and Red Balloon, Books a Million, Imagine Books and Records, Scholastic and Esque and the Friends of Cortez Library.
“August represents the end of the summer vacation and the beginning of another school year. It’s an honor to be part of such a successful event that brings together more than 4,000 residents to prepare our students for the first day of school and the path towards a healthy and successful academic year,” said Councilman Saldaña. “Through our new book fair portion of the event, we hope to promote literacy among our District 4 children and families by providing access to quality children’s books.”
Last year, a record number of immunizations and backpacks were provided to more than 1,900 children. Participants are encouraged to arrive early due to the large crowd that is expected. Call (210) 207-7281 or (210) 207-0880 for more information.
