City Volunteer Corps:
Service with a heart
The City
has a lot of heart. City employees dedicate themselves to their community
through public service. However, many of them, beyond the normal workday,
lend their own time, money and sweat to help others in need.
Since
1997, the City Volunteer
Corps (CVC) has made a difference in the
community through a variety of projects. CVC members, wearing their bright
yellow T-shirts with big read hearts, have been seen: cleaning up and rehabilitating
homes for the elderly and disabled; teaming up to help prevent birth
defects through the annual March of Dimes WalkAmerica; fighting breast
cancer through Race for the Cure; serving Meals on Wheels through
Christian Senior Services; donating school supplies for needy
children; buying Christmas gifts for economically-disadvantaged families;
helping flood victims; raising money for public television; and many more
worthwhile endeavors.
Members of
the CVC see public service not only as a way to make a living, but also as a
way to live their lives. Whether it be painting someone's home or
participating in a walk-a-thon, CVC members touch people's lives. After
all, that's what volunteering is all about... doing things, big or small,
that make this world a better place to be.
