Per Section 302.1 of the 2015 International Building Code, structures or portions of structures shall be classified with respect to occupancy in one or more of the following groups: A-1, A-2, A-3, A-4, A-5, B, E, F-1, F-2 H-1, H-1, h-3, H-4, H-5, I-1, I-2, I-3, I-4, M, R-1, R-2, R-3, R-4, S-1, S-2 and U. These are based upon your proposed building use (e.g., church, retail, elementary school, storage warehouse, etc.). Many building-related code requirements (e.g., do I need a fire sprinkler system, what construction type do I need to be, etc?) are listed as occupancy type specific. Therefore, it is essential that the Occupancy Classification is determined as the first step to ensure that all applicable requirements are met.
