San Antonio District 3 Councilwoman Rebecca Viagran announced the arrival of yet another higher-education institution that will call the Southside and District 3 home, as the University of the Incarnate Word has chosen Brooks City Base as the site of its new medical school.
“I’m proud our months of hard work are paying off,” Councilwoman Viagran said. “The new UIW medical school will bring tremendous opportunity to my district, all of the Southside, the city and the region. Together, we’ll continue working to expand access to educational opportunities to our community.”
The UIW medical school development has brought together private investors, local government, and the San Antonio Independent School District to get to this pivotal point. District 3 was chosen over a downtown location – a fact not lost on Councilwoman Viagran.
“I’ve always worked tirelessly to advocate and fight for the people and businesses of District 3,” she said. “I hope this is just the first step in bringing the focus back to the communities and neighborhoods that asked us to represent them.”
The UIW medical school will join Palo Alto College, Mission Library, Texas A&M-SA, BiblioTech and Pre-K for SA in creating new education opportunities in the Southside.
“It’s hard to put into words what an incredible opportunity the addition of the UIW medical school brings,” said Councilwoman Viagran. “This is a truly transformative opportunity for our area, and it is a forecast of what I firmly believe is yet to come - jobs, education and opportunity. I will continue to work diligently as the representative of District 3 to that end.”
