SAN ANTONIO (August 4, 2014) – Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales of District 5, City officials and area residents celebrated improvements at Collins Gardens Park today. A new pavilion and trail were added to the park, along with improvements to the existing tennis courts and basketball court.
“Collins Gardens Park is surrounded by residents who enjoy this park year round,” said Councilwoman Gonzales. “The end of this project means that residents will now be able to get more use out of this park for their fitness and recreation activities.”
The project began construction in December and was substantially complete in June. Community members were able to contribute their ideas for the project at various public meetings. Improvements were funded with $500,000 from the 2012-2017 Bond Program.
"This is a great community park and we’re happy to be able to give residents more amenities for them to use here," said Mike Frisbie, City Engineer and Director of Transportation & Capital Improvements.
“It has been great to see the neighborhood come out and use the park as a place where families can gather to be active and enjoy themselves,” added Parks and Recreation Director Xavier Urrutia.
The Collins Gardens Park project was managed by Transportation & Capital Improvements on behalf of the Parks and Recreation Department. The design by Bender Wells Clark was constructed by Amstar, Inc.
