As part of the City of San Antonio Center City Development Office’s placemaking initiative, Plaza de Armas and West Commerce Street will be transformed temporarily on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Center City Development Office has engaged Team Better Block to assist the City with this demonstration. Team Better Block is a Dallas-based organization that assists communities in building their own better block. A “Better Block” project is a community project that temporarily demonstrates how to revitalize an area with bicycle, pedestrian and transit infrastructure mixed with art, culture and street life. This Better Block will take place on West Commerce from Flores to Santa Rosa and at the Plaza de Armas parking lot, located between City Hall and Spanish Governor’s Palace.
Residents are invited to come experience a complete street. West Commerce Street will feature “pop up” shops – Revolucion Coffee and free nail trims at Lucy’s Doggy Daycare & Spa, live music, art – a live painting by Joshua Perez, and a holiday market. The Plaza de Armas Holiday Market will take place in the parking lot between City Hall and Spanish Governor’s Palace. The market will showcase a variety of vendors from each City Council District. There will be the opportunity for revelers to choose their favorite at the event by voting at the Yelp! table. After shopping, they can purchase delicious food and listen to live music while enjoying the gorgeous side courtyard at the Spanish Governor’s Palace. They can also join a group run earlier in the day from the Vistana through downtown or later at a Lululemon sponsored Yoga Class by Kristal Cuevas of Southtown Yoga Loft from 11 to 11:45 a.m. or an Argentinian Tango Class by Rincon del Tango from 1 to 2 p.m. in the ground floor of the Vistana, located at the corner of W. Commerce and Laredo. They can also learn more about San Antonio’s B-Cycle, VIA’s Primo Bus and the San Pedro Creek Restoration Project while they’re there.
This will be a fantastic holiday shopping experience and an opportunity to learn more about the future of our Center City. The annual Blessing of the Animals will be happening simultaneously in Market Square at noon, so everyone is encouraged to bring their friends and family to experience a Better Block.
