The City of San Antonio Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission has announced that nominations are currently being accepted for the 2013 Martin Luther King, Jr. Distinguished Achievement Award, the 2013 Baha’i Unity of Humanity Award and the 2013 Rev. Dr. R.A. Callies, Sr. Courage Award. The deadline to submit entries for all three awards is Monday, Dec. 31, 2012. Applications and information are available at sanantonio.gov/mlk.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Distinguished Achievement Award recognizes an individual whose record of personal achievement in the community reflects a strong commitment to human rights, equal educational opportunity, and economic well-being for all – principles that embody the vision of Dr. King. The Baha’i Unity of Humanity Award recognizes members of the community whose lives embody the legacy of Dr. King. The Rev. Dr. R.A. Callies, Sr. Courage Award recognizes an individual, organization or group whose record exhibits the courage of the Rev. Dr. R.A. Callies, Sr., one of the local founders of the annual MLK march, to advance the principles of nonviolence and represent the values and human equalities of Dr. King.
The awards will be announced and presented during the 26th Annual City of San Antonio Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Program at Pittman-Sullivan Park on Monday, Jan. 21, 2013.
Each year, a variety of educational, inspirational and celebratory events honor one of the nation's most revered civil rights leaders. The signature event, the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. March, is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 21, 2013. The march will begin at 10 a.m. at the MLK Academy located in the 3500 block of MLK Drive and end at Pittman-Sullivan Park, 1101 Iowa.
