The San Antonio River Walk will not be drained in 2013. The City’s Public Works and Downtown Operations completed a two year project in 2010 and 2011, improving the water quality and clarity along the San Antonio River Walk by removing a total of 6,252 cubic yards of silt. The silt removed from the river loop and extension has enabled the River Walk to remain full for an additional year. Public Works and Downtown Operations will continue to work together to assess the River Walk to determine if draining is necessary for routine maintenance in the future.
As an additional improvement, Public Works is installing storm water inlet protectors within the downtown area. This initiative will prevent debris from washing into the river and affecting the water quality and clarity.
Draining of the River Walk is scheduled at the beginning of each year in January. The collaborated efforts between Public Works and Downtown Operations will provide two years of continuous River Walk enjoyment, in 2012 and this coming January in 2013.
