Market Street from Bowie Street to I-37 closed to all traffic on Sept. 14, 2013. The closure will remain in place for approximately 11 months and will minimize the overall duration of construction. Maps showing detours for traffic headed to northbound I-37 and southbound I-37 are available online at sanantonio.gov/cims and at facebook.com/SanAntonioCIMS.
To travel to I-37 north, drivers must turn onto Bowie from Market, turn right onto Houston Street, turn left onto Live Oak Street and enter the entrance ramp after Nolan Street.
To travel to I-37 south, drivers need to turn right on either St. Mary's or Alamo Streets, turn left onto Cesar Chavez Boulevard and turn right onto the entrance ramp.
Pedestrians must take a newly constructed pedestrian path on Commerce Street that runs under I-37, which also includes a bike path. The pedestrian bridge that leads to the Alamodome is not available as parts of it have been demolished and are being reconstructed.
Wayfinding signs for drivers and pedestrians have been placed to assist in identifying the new routes. Additionally, various intersections in the area have been modified with additional turn lanes or traffic signal timing adjustments to improve the new flow of traffic. City staff will monitor the affected locations to ensure the adjustments are functioning properly.
The Market Street Realignment project consists of realigning Market Street to run parallel to Commerce Street, adjusting the roadway parallel to I-37 that extends from Commerce Street south to César Chávez Boulevard and creating a pedestrian walkway on Commerce Street under I-37. The project includes construction of a new roadway, installation of sidewalks, bike lanes, traffic signals, a storm drain system, utilities and landscape improvements.
