Immunization Through The Years

San Antonio Metropolitan Health District Receives Immunization Award on March 30, 2009

San Antonio/Bexar County was named the most improved urban area. The award was presented at the CDC's 2009 National Immunization Conference in Dallas.

San Antonio/Bexar County improved 11.3 percentage points in childhood immunizations coverage rate from 2004 to 2008, based on National Immunization Survey data of children 19 through 35 months of age. Coverage is for the 4:3:1:3:3:1 immunization series: four doses of deiphtheria/tetanus/pertussis vaccine, three doses of polio vaccine, one dose of measles vaccine, three doses of Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine, three doses of hepatitis B vaccine and one dose of varicella vaccine.

Vivian Flores, Immunization Program Manager for the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, accepted the award on behalf of the Director of Health.  "This significant increase in the immunization coverage rates in San Antonio and Bexar County is due to the sustained efforts of the Vaccines for Children providers and area health care professionals that strive to protect their patients from vaccine preventable diseases, the immunization stakeholders that promote immunizations, and the parents that choose vaccination to safeguard their children's health."
