Vital Statistics Honored with State’s Five-Star Award

Division reduced turnaround time for records by more than 50%

Metro Health’s Vital Statistics team recently received an honor from the State of Texas for expeditious service in registering birth and death records. The Department of State Health Services (DSHS) gave Metro Health a 2008 Five Star Award for Local Registrars. Metro Health was honored in the recognized category for record registrations within 30 days.

This year marks the first time Metro Health has received the award. DSHS began the awards program in 1997. It considers a number of factors, most notably the turnaround time for registration of records.

“This award recognizes our efforts to provide better service to our customers and I give credit to Sam Torres who manages the Vital Statistics Division and his dedicated staff for achieving this milestone,” said Charles Pruski, assistant director with Metro Health. “In addition, we acknowledge the work of local hospitals and funeral homes that contributed to our success by submitting vital records information in a timely manner. We all understand the important role we play in furnishing birth and death records to our customers. Next year we want to do even better.”

Vital Statistics maintains records of births, deaths, and fetal deaths that occur in Bexar County. The majority of those records date back to the 19th century.
