Final Opportunity to Get Back-to-School Immunizations Before Public School Starts
University Health System partners with Goodwill Industries for August 22 event
New arrivals to Bexar County, families that have not taken advantage of the summer months to update immunizations, or those who may not have received the varicella vaccine should attend an immunization clinic hosted by Goodwill Industries and University Health System (UHS). The clinic is scheduled for Saturday, August 22 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at 10647 Culebra Road (at Loop 1604).
To help expedite service, parents should:
Take the most recent shot record to the appointment.
Have valid or current Medicaid or CHIP information, cash or insurance information.
Bring a letter from the school nurse, if you received one.
Public schools throughout Bexar County will start the 2009-2010 school year on Monday, August 24. Most districts will follow a “no shots, no school” policy. Metro Health is advising schools to allow provisional enrollment to students who are not current on their varicella (chicken pox) vaccination due to a shortage among some private health care and Vaccines for Children providers. This recommendation applies to the varicella vaccine only. Students are expected to have all other immunizations up to date.
Children who were unable to receive the immunization can still access it Saturday at the Goodwill clinic or they can visit a Metro Health clinic during regular operating hours next week.
