The Mayor’s Fitness Council and San Antonio Food Bank (SAFB) encourages local educators to attend the First Annual Mayor’s Fitness Council Nutrition Summit. The Summit is scheduled for Tue., Mar. 18, 2014 at the San Antonio Food Bank’s new event space, 5200 W. Old US Highway 90, San Antonio, TX 78227. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., with the program taking place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Summit will feature several presentations, cooking demonstrations, panel discussions and the introduction of the Nutrition Activity Kit- “Prescribing Fresh Produce to Prevent Disease SA!” Dr. Julie La Barba, Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio will address the low intake of fruit & vegetables and water of Bexar County residents. Eric Cooper, President and CEO of the SAFB will introduce the Nutrition Activity Kit and Kathleen Shields, Chronic Disease Program Manager of the Metropolitan Health District will present on the 2013 Nutrition Fact Sheets.
Cooking demonstrations from the Chef Cooperative and SAFB Chefs will include a variety of healthy foods that can be prepared quickly and easily at home. Linda Farr, RDN/LD/FAND, will moderate a panel presentation that includes: Dion Turner, Director of Food and Nutrition of Resolute Health, Pedro Schambon of My Father’s Farm and Robert Maggiani of the National Center for Appropriate Technology. David Whitt, Manager of Special Events and Corporate Development of the American Diabetes Association will moderate a panel presentation that includes: Monty McGuffin, RS Water Quality Supervisor of the San Antonio Water System and Lauren Trapane, SAFB Physical Activity Specialist.
A luncheon will be held in the newly completed Harvey Najim Children’s Pavilion and Chef Elizabeth Johnson will present on Prescribing Produce to Prevent Disease SA!
