Great stories change the world. It is said that when President Abraham
Lincoln was introduced to Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle
Tom’s Cabin, he said, “Ah, the little lady who started the great
war.”
We all remember books that have had an impact on us – that helped us change our thinking, or understand a feeling, or visualize another time or place. It’s important for us to share and discuss these stories that have changed the world, and have changed our individual worlds.
To Kill a Mockingbird is one of those great stories. Published in 1960, it was an almost instant success and has become a modern classic, one of those books that is both required reading in the classroom and a story to read, enjoy and ponder over again and again. The film version of the book became a classic in its own right, winning three Academy Awards, including the Best Actor award for Gregory Peck, who played Atticus Finch.
