"I was swept off my feet by a wave when I was three and
have been in love with the sea ever since." Sylvia Earle
In observance of the San Antonio Public Library’s 100th
birthday celebration the San Antonio Public Library Foundation (SAPLF),
Bank of America and the Alameda National Center for Latino Arts and
Culture are pleased to bring Deep Sea Explorer and National Geographic
Explorer-in-Residence, Dr. Sylvia Earle, to San Antonio for a free public
lecture. Titled, "Exploring the Deep Frontier" the lecture
will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday April 20, at the Charline
McCombs Empire Theater. An assortment of Dr. Earle’s books will be
available for purchase (provided by Barnes & Noble with 20% of book sales
benefiting the SAPLF) at the lecture and she will be available to sign
books before the lecture.
Recognized by the Library of Congress as a "Living Legend," Dr. Earle
has been an explorer-in-residence at the National Geographic Society since
1998. Named Time magazine's first "hero for the planet" in 1998,
Earle has pioneered research on marine ecosystems and has led more than 50
expeditions totaling more than 6,000 hours underwater. She also led the
first team of women aquanauts during the Tektite Project in 1970 and holds
a depth record for solo diving (1,000 meters). Dr. Earle is presently
Chairman of Deep Ocean Exploration & Research and the Explorer in
Residence at the National Geographic Society. In addition, she serves as
the Honorary President of the Explorers Club, the Center for Marine
Conservation Ambassador for the Oceans, and as a Spokesperson for Sea Web.
She is the leader for the Sustainable Seas Expedition, a five-year study
of the National Marine Sanctuaries sponsored by National Geographic. She
is an adjunct scientist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI),
a Director of Kerr-McGee Inc., and serves on various boards, foundations
and committees relating to marine research, policy and conservation.
While in San Antonio Dr. Earle will participate in a special School
Outreach Program, provided by Region 20 Education Service Center,
designed to bring the "discovery experience" to the students of San
Antonio and South Texas via interactive distance learning and other new
technologies. Audiences of all ages will be transported to faraway places
of adventure, accessible through the Explorers’ own experiences, and also
through the marvelous books in the San Antonio Public Library…a virtual
gateway to the farthest frontiers! Her books include "Sea Change" and
"Exploring the Deep Frontier", and children’s books "Hello Fish," "Sea
Critters" and "DIVE!," winner of 5 awards for excellence.
Following Sunday’s lecture, the Texas Cavaliers are honored to welcome
Dr. Earle as Grand Marshal of the annual Fiesta River Parade,
Monday, April 21st. Admission to the lecture is free with a
Library card. If you don’t have a Library card, applications will be
available at the event.

Web Evaluation
Have you ever used the Internet to look up legal
information? Crawled the web for financial scoops? Used a search
engine such as Google to research health topics such as allergies
or migraines? If you use the web as an information source, then
you should know the importance of web evaluation.
Unlike print resources at the library, there is
no editor to enforce quality standards on the web. When you are
doing research on the Internet, you must think critically about
the legitimacy of the web resource. Some good questions to ask
include:
· Who is the author?
If you have found an article on the web about arthritis treatment,
does it give any indication of who wrote it? What are the
credentials or authority of that person and does it indicate what
company or institution they are affiliated with?
· What is the date?
If you are searching for financial information, it helps to have
an article that is recent. A financial website with articles that
date from even two years ago are too old to be of current use.
· What does the website
look like? This should not be the only factor in
determining the quality of online resources, but when combined
with the other points here it can help. Are the links easy to
find? Does the article have a list of resources that it used in
the creation of the article? Are there typos? Misspellings?
· Does the web article
have an objective? There are many health related
websites that do provide impartial health information and current
articles. However, there are also health articles on the web
sponsored by a drug company, or a doctor selling his own special
treatment package, making the site one-sided. Make sure you can
tell the difference between the two. It should be clear where to
go on the website to find out about the company or organization
providing you with the information (usually in an ‘About Us’
section).
