Dan Stanford, Public Servant of the Year

Dan Stanford.Dan Stanford, Interim Manager of Reference at Central Library, received the Public Servant of the Year Award presented at the city-wide 15th Anniversary Celebration of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act at La Villita Assembly Hall on July 29th. The prestigious award is presented to a government employee who has helped members of the community with disabilities in efforts to be fully independent.

Dan was nominated by Barbara Celitans on behalf of the San Antonio Public Library for his outstanding work and dedication to increasing public awareness of library services for patrons with disabilities. Dan implemented the Semmes Grant providing electronic resources for the visually impaired. He trains library staff and patrons on using the ZoomText magnifying software as well as the basics of using OpenBook and JAWS screen-reading programs. Between the use of these software packages and the library-owned CCTV magnifying devices, the library's print and electronic resources can be accessed by our visually impaired patrons. Dan also presents outreach programs for the disabled at SAPL and in the San Antonio community.

Having dedicated staff makes the San Antonio Public Library a special place, and we are happy to see Dan’s efforts recognized by the community.

Mid-September to Mid-October is Knit-Out & Crochet Time

Knit-Out & Crochet 2005You won’t want to miss out on the Knit-Out & Crochet Time if you have never crocheted or knitted in your life and would like to start, if you haven't picked up your needles or hooks in a long time, or if you are experienced but would still like to learn something new.

The Craft Yarn Council of America started Knit-Outs more than six years ago with the goal of encouraging the public to learn to knit or crochet. The idea caught on and with the support of local and national crochet and knitting guilds and retailers, Knit-Out & Crochet events are now being sponsored around the country.

Alamo Rows Crochet Guild is hosting a “Knit-Out/Crochet Too” event here in San Antonio on Saturday, September 17, 2005, at the Central Library from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The event will include a display of knit and crochet items demonstrating the creative possibilities. Experienced volunteers will be available to teach the basics and assist with problematic projects, to young and old alike.

If you can’t make the event, check out materials anytime at a library near you to with instructions on learning how to knit and crochet, or with new patterns for those experienced with their needles.

are you prepared FOR THE unexpected?

Ready South TexasLearn how to make the right decisions to protect yourself and your loved ones should a natural or man-made emergency occur. Although there is no way to predict what will happen in the future, there are simple things that everyone can do to be better prepared during any emergency. Chief Randy Jenkins of the San Antonio Fire Department will be discussing the new Ready South Texas Emergency Preparedness Guides at branch libraries in four different sectors of the City.

The guides and the accompanying educational activity book on preparedness for children have been produced as a collaborative effort between the City of San Antonio, Bexar County, Comal County, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Topics covered include setting up a family communications plan, evacuating a building, seeking the right shelter, preparing a basic supply kit, and much more.

Don’t miss the opportunity to discuss emergency preparedness with Chief Jenkins. Join us at one of the following branch libraries:
