Landa Branch Library Reopening Scheduled
Officials of the San Antonio Public Library and the Landa Gardens
Conservancy have announced that a ribbon cutting to celebrate the
opening of the new Landa Gardens has been scheduled at the Landa Branch
Library, 233 Bushnell Avenue, on Thursday, May 1, at 10:00 a.m. The
ribbon-cutting ceremony will be followed by a library open house lasting
until 2:00 p.m. A gala celebration will take place on the library
grounds that evening, beginning at 7:00 p.m. The branch library will
open for full service on its regular schedule beginning Friday, May 2,
at 9:00 a.m.
Tickets to the gala are available for sale to the public by calling
(210) 229-0600 or (210) 844-7001.
The library closed on June 1, 2007, to allow the Landa Gardens
Conservancy grounds project to begin. Since that time, according to
Conservancy founding member Jill Torbert, “We have created beautiful
landscaping, with a grand lawn, walking paths around the entire property
and a community garden, installed thirty benches, installed a water
fountain, constructed a unique and magnificent faux bois [French for
“false wood”] pavilion, installed new swings, and doubled the amount of
parking. In short, the entire five acres has been transformed into a
park!”
At the same time, work began on the library. With funding from the
City of San Antonio capital budget and donations to the San Antonio
Public Library Foundation from the Bill Greehey family, Valero Energy
Corporation, and Mr. and Mrs. John Sheesley, the Mediterranean-style
building’s barrel-tile roof was restored. Interior work now underway
includes a new circulation desk, re-painting, replacement of carpeting
and other floor coverings, and relocation of some of the public
computers.
For more than 100 years, the award-winning San Antonio Public Library
has been a vital center for free learning, knowledge, communication,
culture and enjoyment for all San Antonians. With a world-class Central
Library, branch libraries throughout the city, and outstanding online
resources, the San Antonio Public Library is as close as around the
corner or the nearest computer.
