Watch Mayor Julián Castro's United State of the City Address
Speaking at a historic event sponsored by four of the city's most prominent chambers of commerce, Castro urged business leaders and residents to back bold investments in education, infrastructure and the city's urban core. Castro said San Antonians will have two opportunities in 2012 to profoundly impact the future of the city. One is the 2012 city bond program, which is expected to total about $596 million. The other is a possible 1/8-cent sales tax proposal in the fall of 2012 to fund an education proposal targeting one of three areas: kindergarten readiness, dropout reduction or college matriculation. "I ask each and every one of you in your capacity as business people, as business owners, as nonprofit directors, as San Antonians, to assist that effort in every way you can, to keep an open mind, and to keep your mind on the future and what we can accomplish for the young people if we believe in them enough to invest wisely." |
