Early in his tenure, Mayor Castro declared this “The Decade of Downtown” and promised to revitalize and reenergize San Antonio’s core. A major part of his vision is the restoration of HemisFair Park. The goal of the project is to restore the site of the 1968 World’s Fair to a world-class public space.

In 2009, the Mayor and City Council created HemisFair Park Area Redevelopment Corporation to oversee the project. Read more on their Master Plan.

Below is the most recent progress made by HPARC:

May 2013

  • Legislation allowing for the expansion and redevelopment of HemisFair Park passed both the Texas House of Representatives and the Texas Senate.

June 2013

  • The HemisFair bill was signed into law on Friday, June 14.
  • City Council approved contracts for the Play Escape portion of the HemisFair redevelopment, the restoration of Magik Theater and the restoration of historic HemisFair homes.
