The World Famous San Antonio Riverwalk has been described as the “The American Venice”, “The Rivera of Texas”, and the “Jewel of San Antonio”. The Riverwalk is a public park in and of itself open 365 days a year. In downtown San Antonio, it is a network of beautifully winding walkways lined with bars, shops, restaurants, hotels and beautiful picturesque pathways which stretch nearly five miles along the banks of the San Antonio River, one story beneath the hustle and bustle of downtown San Antonio. The new North Reach and South Reach Riverwalk extensions now stretch through several more miles of San Antonio and feature beautiful picturesque walkways and bike trails. Over twelve million people visit the San Antonio Riverwalk each year.
The San Antonio Park Police have the primary responsibility for providing law enforcement and security services on the Riverwalk twenty four hours a day, three hundred and sixty five days a year. Park Police Officers patrol the Riverwalk in patrol boats, on bicycles, and on foot. We handle crowd control and enforce State Laws and City Ordinances on the Riverwalk.
The Riverwalk hosts numerous events each year both large and small. These include parades, art shows, Fiesta Events, Christmas Lighting, to name a few of the celebrations. These events can bring from hundreds of visitors, to hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Riverwalk in addition to our normal visitors and tourists. Park Police work closely with the San Antonio Police Department during these large events to help protect our visitors and our Riverwalk.
In addition to the other duties of the San Antonio Park Police, we are are also in charge of flood control on the Riverwalk.
