Tree Recovery Initiative announced for residents impacted by recent storm


(San Antonio, TX – March 10, 2017) - Mayor Ivy Taylor, District 1 City Councilman Roberto Treviño and District 10 City Councilman Mike Gallagher announced a tree recovery initiative to provide impacted residents of the Feb. 19-20 storm event. The tree recovery initiative will utilize Tree Mitigation funds for tree giveaways and planting of large trees at eligible homes in the following neighborhood associations: Shearer Hills/Ridgeview, Oak Park/Northwood and Northern Hills. 

The department will be on-site in each neighborhood association for two events (daytime and evening) providing direct outreach to residents. All residents within the identified neighborhood will be able to adopt a tree through free giveaways of small and medium native, oak-wilt resistant and shade trees of various species. In addition, residents in defined areas of impact within the neighborhood will be able to fill out a tree voucher for free installation services of large native, oak-wilt resistant and shade trees of various species. Vouchers will include a site assessment, utility locates and tree installation services at no cost to the resident. Staff will be available to answer questions and provide long-term care instructions for trees throughout the process.

The Parks and Recreation Department is committed to providing resources to City residents to improve the quality of life for all and will continue this effort by scheduling tree giveaways in various areas of the City during the planting season.
