Take Note Youth Band

Take Note Band Audition PSA

San Antonio teens, ages 13 to 18, who play keyboards or bass guitar are invited to show off their musical talents with the possibility of joining the City’s award winning Take Note youth band. The Parks and Recreation Department invites interested musicians to submit an audition DVD or CD by Friday, March 20.

Staff recommends musicians take this opportunity to create a quality audition piece that could potentially allow them to join some of the City’s best young musical talent as they perform year round at various venues and events.

Interested youth should submit a photo and a DVD or CD with a demonstration of themselves that reflects their skill and stage presence on their instrument. Also required is a letter explaining how they can add to and benefit from participation in the band.

Individuals may be selected for auditions based on materials submitted. From audition results, those selected to join the Take Note youth band will be introduced to the concepts needed to perform a variety of styles of music such as pop, rock, jazz and blues in preparation for live performances at venues throughout the City.

Scholarship Winner Andres Ovalle:
A Take Note success story!

Andres OvalleSt. Mary’s University drum set music major Andres Ovalle, 18, started playing drums his freshman year in high school. He began taking lessons in the Parks and Recreation Department music program six months later. After a year of lessons, he tried out for the department’s youth music ensemble and won a spot as the group’s drummer. He spent the next three years honing his craft as a drummer and musician.

"After joining Take Note, all I could think about was what was needed to be practiced, what songs needed work, and anything I could do to help myself improve," he recalls. "I was lucky enough to play with and learn from musicians such as Henry Brun and the Army Band."

His experience with Take Note made him realize he wanted to pursue music as an occupation. His experience and years of dedicated play with Take Note resulted in the Chaminade Grant and a music scholarship at St. Mary’s University. He is the only drum set music major at the university.

"It wouldn’t have been possible to get here without the experience of Take Note," he says. "The program helped me not only as a musician, but as a person as well. I believe it was probably the best thing that’s ever happened to me."
