Scholarship Winner Andres Ovalle:
A Take Note success story!

Andres OvalleSt. Mary’s University drum set music major Andres Ovalle, 18, started playing drums his freshman year in high school. He began taking lessons in the Parks and Recreation Department music program six months later. After a year of lessons, he tried out for the department’s youth music ensemble and won a spot as the group’s drummer. He spent the next three years honing his craft as a drummer and musician.

"After joining Take Note, all I could think about was what was needed to be practiced, what songs needed work, and anything I could do to help myself improve," he recalls. "I was lucky enough to play with and learn from musicians such as Henry Brun and the Army Band."

His experience with Take Note made him realize he wanted to pursue music as an occupation. His experience and years of dedicated play with Take Note resulted in the Chaminade Grant and a music scholarship at St. Mary’s University. He is the only drum set music major at the university.

"It wouldn’t have been possible to get here without the experience of Take Note," he says. "The program helped me not only as a musician, but as a person as well. I believe it was probably the best thing that’s ever happened to me."
