Summer pool season underway

Natatorium closes temporarily for renovations;
Outdoor pools will offer other opportunities

The San Antonio Natatorium, 1430 E. Cesar Chavez Blvd., temporarily closed its doors beginning Monday, June 17, 2013, in order to allow renovations to occur during the summer outdoor pool season. The closing is timed to give Natatorium swimmers other options for their swimming enjoyment. The $400,000 project, funded from the 2012-2017 Bond Program, includes replacement of a textured material on the floors with a new non-slip flooring, replacement of sky lights, and restroom modifications.

The Parks and Recreation Department has identified a number of alternative locations for Natatorium patrons to continue to swim during the time the facility is closed. Senior swim will be offered at Woodlawn Lake Park pool and the Westside YMCA, for example, while adult lap swim will be offered at the Parks Department’s four regional pools and the Westside YMCA. Individual and group swim lessons will be available at several outdoor pools during the summer season. To view a listing of the alternative locations, click on the link below:

Hiring of lifeguard, pool attendants

Lifeguards, public service attendants and pool supervisors are hired in the spring each year for the outdoor pool season. Lifeguard applicants must be at least 16 and must pass a swim skills test. The department provides CPR and lifesaving training to prepare hirees for their lifeguarding responsibilities. Applicants who have passed the prerequisite test will be scheduled for training. The starting salary is $9.01 per hour.
