Downtown Tuesday, the City of San Antonio initiative started by Councilman Diego Bernal, celebrated two successful years in operation with a special celebration at the Houston Street Courtyard near Bohanan's, 219 E. Houston St. today.
“The goal and purpose of Downtown Tuesday is to bring locals back to their downtown during one of the traditionally slower business days, that way we help our downtown business owners along the way,” Councilman Bernal said. “We're making good progress, and I'm excited about the future of the program as more San Antonio residents rediscover their downtown.”
The Downtown Tuesday initiative, which began in 2012, provides free parking at all City-operated parking garages, lots and meters every Tuesday from 5 p.m. until 2 a.m. Downtown Tuesday partners, including restaurants, bars, attractions and museums, offer Tuesday-only specials. More than 70 businesses currently participate in Downtown Tuesday. The program was created to make parking downtown easily accessible to residents, so that they would spend more time in downtown San Antonio.
“Downtown Tuesday is one of the many ways we are making downtown more inviting for our residents,” Mayor Julián Castro said. “The growth in the number of people taking advantage of the free parking is an indication that downtown is becoming a vibrant, 24-7 destination.”
Additionally, the launch of Downtown Tuesday's quarterly events “Be-Cause” were announced, and the first one is hosted this evening by Esquire Tavern, 155 E. Commerce St., from 7 - 9 p.m. The event will include entertainment by The Tomcat String Trio, appetizers and a Downtown Tuesday specialty drink for all attendees who RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org. Entry is $15 per person, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit United Way San Antonio.
