The City of San Antonio’s Pre-K 4 SA program announced the selection of its two new directors. Longtime Texas educators and leaders in early childhood education, Janice Marie Hammonds and Christina Reck-Guerra have been selected to lead Pre-K 4 SA’s new East and West Education Centers, respectively.
In February, Mayor Julián Castro unveiled designs for the two new education centers on the East and West sides of San Antonio for the 2014-2015 school year. The enrollment periods for all four centers, including the Pre-K 4 SA South and North Education Centers, is underway. The Centers will serve as a resource and provide professional development and training to other Pre-K teachers, teacher aides, providers and education leaders throughout the city. They also will boast a robust parent support component, bringing students, teachers and parents together to provide the utmost support for their success in the program.
Hammonds most recently served as the principal for the Uphaus Early Childhood Center in Austin, Texas. She brings 32 years of experience in early childhood education and administration, holds a Master of Education from Texas State University and a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education from the Texas Women’s University. Raised in Houston, Texas, the mother of two is described as a “high-energy educator” and a dedicated advocate for children and their families who believe that when young learners are given a quality education, it allows them to thrive and realize their potential. “There is nothing greater than seeing the spark in a child’s eye as he or she discovers that they can,” said Hammonds.
Reck-Guerra brings 23 years of experience in elementary education, most recently as principal for East Terrell Hills Elementary in the North East Independent School District in San Antonio. She holds a Master of School Administration from Trinity University and a Bachelor of Arts in elementary and early childhood education from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Her work with children from economically-disadvantaged homes has helped her understand the importance of an educational foundation that supports the social, emotional, physical, linguistic and cognitive development of every child.
