The City of San Antonio will offer free transportation through VIA Transit to families attending the pre-enrollment fairs to register their 4-year-old children in the Pre-K 4 SA program.
The free bus service will be offered on May 1-2, May 4, and May 6-9. Families who board the bus must tell the driver they are going to the Pre-K 4 SA enrollment fairs in order to receive the complimentary transportation.
“We want to make sure that every family who might need transportation assistance will not have to worry about how they are going to get to an enrollment fair,” said Elaine Mendoza, Pre-K 4 SA board chairperson. “We will do whatever we can to encourage parents to enroll their 4-year-olds on the day of the respective fairs.”
Pre-K 4 SA will provide high-quality, full-day pre-kindergarten classes to 4-year-old children through the city to prepare them to be successful by the time they enter first grade.
Enrollment will involve a four-step process: Pre-enroll in May, lottery in June, finalize enrollment in July and notice of qualifying in July/August. After parents have pre-enrolled their child, 630 slots will be chosen by lottery. Of those children not selected, they will be put on a waiting list. A separate lottery will be held for 70 slots for children whose parents will pay through income-based fees. In July, the 700 children chosen for Pre-K 4 SA will complete enrollment to qualify for classes in August.
