In partnership with the Pre-K 4 SA Board, led by Board Chair Elaine Mendoza, the City of San Antonio is pleased to announce its executive appointment of CEO to the Pre-K 4 SA Program, Kathy Bruck.
“With our focus squarely on creating Education Centers of innovation and excellence, we were determined to identify a leader who not only believed in this goal, but who had the excitement and expertise to do so,” said Mendoza, Pre-K 4 SA Board Chair. “Kathy’s passion is well demonstrated through her vision and work.”
Bruck had been serving as interim CEO for Pre-K 4 SA since May 6, 2013, and was appointed CEO by the Pre-K 4 SA Board today. She will be responsible for guiding the overall operations of the Pre-K 4 SA Program with policy direction from the Board of Directors.
“I believe that Pre-K 4 SA is not only an investment in the education and preparation of 4-year old children, but it is an investment in our future workforce,” said Joe Robles, Pre-K 4 SA Personnel Committee Chair. “Kathy has the commitment to ensure that we are preparing these children for success in school and success in the workplace.”
She previously served as executive director for curriculum and instruction at Harlandale Independent School District. She joins the City with nearly 40 years of experience in early childhood education, social services, curriculum and instruction. She holds a Master of Arts in educational psychology and supervision from the University of Texas at San Antonio, and a Bachelor of Science in elementary education from St. John’s University in New York City.
“I’ve been very impressed with Kathy Bruck’s performance as interim CEO of Pre-K 4 SA,” Mayor Julián Castro said. “She has the talent, leadership qualities and the breadth of experience in early childhood education to help guide a generation of four-year-olds on a path to academic success."
The Pre-K 4 SA Initiative will provide high–quality, full-day Pre-K for an estimated 22,000 four-year-olds over eight years, including 2,000 who will be served through four Pre-K 4 SA Education Centers.
“Kathy’s been instrumental in the development and operations of the Pre-K 4 SA Program as the Interim CEO,” said City Manager Sheryl Sculley. “She has valuable and extensive experience in Pre-K curriculum development, and managing instructional and operational Program requirements. In the one month she has served in an interim capacity, she helped hire teachers and staff, and select a transportation vendor and a curriculum provider. Her extensive knowledge of early childhood education and education makes her the ideal leader for the Pre-K 4 SA Program.”
The Program will improve teacher professional development for all participating school districts from Pre-K through Grade 3. Pre-K 4 SA also will provide high-quality Pre-K services for an additional 1,700 children through a competitive grant process beginning in the 2016-2017 school year with participating school districts and educational providers.
