District 8 City Councilman Ron Nirenberg has asked that the San Antonio Public Library Board revise their library Internet safety policies to achieve compliance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). CIPA was enacted by Congress in 2000 to address concerns about children’s access to obscene or harmful content over the Internet.
“I believe that the implementation of these measures is necessary to protect young public library patrons and that achieving CIPA compliance is in the best interest of the citizens of San Antonio,” said Councilman Nirenberg.
CIPA also places certain requirements on schools and libraries that receive discounts for Internet access or internal connections through the E-rate program. E-rate is a program that makes certain communications services and products more affordable for eligible schools and libraries.
