Project Scope
The City of San Antonio's Department of Public Works, in partnership with the Bexar County Department of Public Works and San Antonio River Authority (SARA) are working in a collaborative manner with San Antonio Water Systems, CPS Energy and AT&T to improve the street condition and drainage facilities along S. Alamo Street from Probandt Street to Pereida Street. The proposed improvements will alleviate drainage issues along this corridor, improve roadway conditions, and provide enhanced pedestrian facilities. Construction began October 2012 and is estimated to be complete by August 2014.

Improvements include:

  • Roadway reconstruction from existing 4-lane to proposed 3-lane including a center turn lane
  • Improved drainage storm sewer infrastructure
  • Improved wider sidewalks:
    • 4 ft to 12 ft on the south side
    • 4 ft to 6 ft on the north side
  • Improved curb ramps to meet current ADA standards
  • Pedestrian crosswalks
  • Landscaping
  • Utility replacements:
    • SAWS water and sewer replacements including a 12-in water line and a 36-in sewer line under the San Antonio River
    • CPS underground gas main replacement
    • AT&T fiber optic line replacement

Vehicular access thru this intersection will not be allowed because of temporary sanitary sewer bypass pumping. Pedestrian access will still be available. Please use the internal traffic control detour located along Johnson Street and Wickes Street for traffic circulation thru the neighborhood.

March 11, 2014 S Alamo Street from Pereida to Guenther is now substantially complete and open for traffic.
This segment is the majority of the City’s $2.4 M scope of work (total project value is $6.1 M), which has been completed by the City’s contractor, J3 Company, approximately six (6) weeks ahead of schedule. Please note the recently placed asphalt layer within this section is not the final pavement layer. J3 Company will install the final asphalt layer once the remaining scope of work between Guenther and Probandt is complete. The remaining section from Guenther to Probandt will continue to be closed until August to allow SAWS to complete construction of the sewer siphon system under the San Antonio River.

April 14, 2014 The intersection of S Alamo St. and Guenther St. will be closed to traffic on Monday, April 14, 2014, to enable the installation of an improved pavement surface. The intersection will reopen to traffic circulation on the morning of Tuesday, April 15, 2014.
Note: This activity has been postponed because of the rain experienced on this day. This activity has been rescheduled for Wednesday, April 16, 2014.
April 16, 2014 The intersection of S Alamo St. and Guenther St. will be closed to traffic on Wednesday, April 16, 2014, to enable the installation of an improved pavement surface. The intersection will reopen to traffic circulation on the morning of Thursday, April 17, 2014.
