WHAT IS E.A.S.E. ?

E.A.S.E., Educate, Assist, Support & Empower, is a program within the San Antonio Police Department that provides access to police services for persons who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH). By working with local ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation services, and training officers in handling DHH persons, we seek to provide better communication services for victims.

E.A.S.E. began by coordinating with on-site ASL interpreters. In the past, when DHH persons were involved in police matters, an on-site interpreter was requested through SAPD Dispatch. In 2004, a program was developed through Deaf Link to offer internet-based video interpretation services at all SAPD substations and at SAPD Headquarters. This 3-way videoconferencing system allows a qualified ASL interpreter to interpret what a DHH person is communicating by using sign language. The interpreter can also translate questions from an officer into sign language. SAPD offers both on-site interpreters and video interpretation services for victims who are deaf and hard of hearing.
