FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2006, SAN ANTONIO POLICE OFFICERS WILL HAVE THE
AUTHORITY TO IMPOUND (TOW) A VEHICLE IF THE DRIVER CANNOT SHOW PROOF
OF INSURANCE (FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY).
Sec. 601.051 of the Transportation Code, Requirements
of Financial Responsibility:
A person may not operate a motor vehicle in this state unless financial
responsibility is established for that vehicle through
- a motor vehicle liability insurance policy that complies with
Subchapter D;
- a surety bond filed under Section 601.121;
- a deposit under Section 601.122;
- a deposit under Section 601.123; or
- self-insurance under Section 601.124.
IMPOUNDED VEHICLES WILL BE TOWED TO THE GROWDEN IMPOUND FACILITY.
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR VEHICLE IS TOWED
ARRANGEMENTS FOR DRIVER/OCCUPANTS IF 17 OR OLDER:

Driver will be provided with a card where vehicle will be towed and release information.
- Officers can assist in making arrangements for transportation.
- Officer may take them to a police substation or residence.
- Officers may drop them off at another location, if closer.
- Driver/Occupant may waive transportation.
ARRANGEMENTS FOR DRIVER/OCCUPANTS IF UNDER 17:
-
Driver will be provided with a card where vehicle will be towed and release information.
- Officers will request a parent, legal guardian or custodian to pick them up.
occupant can be taken to the Juvenile Office to locate same.
- If unable to locate parent, legal guardian or custodian, driver/occupan can
be taken to the Juvenile Office to locate same.
- Officers may take them to residence, if closer.
- Driver/Occupant may waive transportation.
THE OWNER OF THE VEHICLE MAY CLAIM THE VEHICLE AT THE GROWDEN
VEHICLE STORAGE FACILITY, WHICH IS NOW UNDER PRIVATE MANAGEMENT.
