In January 2014, Transportation & Capital Improvements was created by joining together the former Public Works and Capital Improvements Management Services Departments. The newly created department contains a work-force of over 800 employees dedicated to meeting the infrastructure needs of the City of San Antonio.
The functions of each separate department remain charged to TCI. This includes the 5-year rolling Infrastructure Management Program (IMP), bond projects and other capital projects like the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center Expansion and the San Antonio Airport projects.
TCI manages both the 2007-2012 and the 2012-2017 Bond Programs through all phases of design, construction and inspection. The department also coordinates the consultant selection, construction contractor procurement and project delivery for all capital improvement construction projects.
The department is also home to business and residential resources in the form of groups like the Disability Access Office, Storm Water Plan Review and Transportation Plan Review. Each team is active in moving San Antonio forward.
