There is a huge population of stray animals within the city of San Antonio. Some have wandered away from home and either couldn’t be found by their owner or the owner never attempted to locate the missing pet. And, without ID tags, it becomes extremely difficult to reunite the pet with its owner.

Often, owners intentionally allow an unwanted pet or its litter to stray or “dump” them somewhere instead of accepting the responsibility of spaying or neutering their pet or attempting to find them a good home where the pet will be loved and taken care of for life. Abandoned and left to roam the streets in search of food and shelter, the former pet usually finds a mate and produces more unwanted litters which, in turn, exponentially produce more dogs and cats in a community already challenged with finding ‘forever’ homes for the existing pet population.

A combination of irresponsible pet ownership, breeding and other factors results in the tremendous number of animals entering the ACS facility. Unfortunately, their future doesn’t always look very bright. Many stray animals are ill or injured and require humane treatment.

Please be part of the solution and spay (female) or neuter (male) your pet. Also, practice responsible pet ownership by keeping your dog or cat confined to your yard or home and using a leash when in public. Still, accidents can happen so keeping your pet’s ID tags and license current will go a long way towards reuniting you with your pet if it should stray from home.
