Animal Care Services has
a new home! The new $12 million dollar campus style facility opened
its doors January 7, 2009 and visitors are already impressed with its
welcoming atmosphere. The new shelter is located just minutes from
downtown off the Highway 151 access road near Old Highway 90 and it sits on
15 acres with room for future expansion.
The highlight of the new shelter is
undoubtedly the expanded adoption kennels for both dogs and cats. The
area for dogs features more than 100 runs for adoptable canines looking for
permanent homes. Don’t forget to check out our “get acquainted” areas for
you to visit with your potential future pet. Feel free to bring other
family members, including the four-legged ones, so everyone can get to know
each other.
The cat adoption kennel features both
individual enclosures and a 45 square foot “Cat Condo” where potential
adopters can get to know our wonderful feline friends. Both Adoption
areas are easily accessible with cats featured prominently in the main lobby
of the shelter.
The new ACS facility also features more than
38,000 square feet of space to provide humane care for the lost, abandoned
or stray animals in our community. Kennel space is expanded more than
40% compared to our old shelter and each kennel features soundproofing,
skylights, and innovative cleaning systems.
Medical care for the shelter’s animals has
been upgraded thanks to a new veterinary clinic on site. The new clinic is
twice the size of the previous medical facilities and features not only
expanded treatment areas but a state of the art surgical suite. Thanks
to our expanded veterinary capabilities, Animal Care Services will soon be
able to offer free and low cost spay/neuter and vaccination services to the
public.
Other highlights of the innovative ACS shelter
include covered stalls for livestock, a separate sick bay kennel and a
special housing area for feral cats. Visitors will appreciate the
expanded parking and there’s plenty of green space and roomy benches
throughout the facility.
The new shelter is just one way in which we’re
embracing the positive goals outlined in the ACS 5 Year Strategic Plan- our
community’s “road map” to becoming a No Kill city by 2012. How can you
help? Opt to Adopt at ACS. Volunteer. Foster. Spay.
Neuter. Practice Responsible Pet Ownership.
Stop by for a visit to the new Animal Care
Services shelter…we’re sure you’ll agree—It’s a new day for companion
animals in San Antonio.
