SAT Fast Facts

Location:  San Antonio International Airport is located in Northern San Antonio, approximately eight miles or 15 minutes from the downtown area.  Loop 410 and U.S. 281 are the two highways providing access to the main entry points. Click here to get directions to the airport.

Size:  SAT covers 2,600 acres and is the primary airport serving the San Antonio metropolitan area. 

Terminals:   SAT is a two-terminal facility.  Terminal Two was completed in 1953 with a satellite concourse constructed in 1968, while Terminal One was unveiled in 1984.  Click here to see a map of each terminal.

Runways:  SAT has two all-weather air carrier runways:

  • Runway 12R/30L is 8,502 feet long & 150 feet wide.
  • Runway 3/21 is 7,505 feet long & 150 feet wide.

The airport also has one general aviation runway;  Runway 12L/30R is 5,519 feet long and 100 feet wide.  Click here to see a map of the airfield.

 Statistics:  2007 end-of-year statistics show that SAT had:

  • An average of 260 daily domestic and international departures and arrivals.
  • Total number of passengers was 8,031,405.

Operations and SAT Structure:  The San Antonio Airport System is operated by the City of San Antonio Department of Aviation.  The department currently employs 400 people to support the 24-hour operation of both San Antonio International Airport and Stinson Municipal Airport.  Airport operations and improvements at SAT and Stinson are paid for by user fees, bond funds and money from the Aviation Trust Fund, which is disbursed by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Air Service:  SAT is serviced by the following air-carriers:  Aerolitoral, Aeromexico, AirTran, American Airlines,  Continental, Continental Express, Delta, and Delta Connection Carriers (ASA, Comair and Skywest), ExpressJet, Frontier, Mexicana, Midwest, Northwest, Southwest, Sky West, Spirit, United & US Airways.  These airlines collectively offer non-stop service to 43 different markets. Click here for traveler's tips.

Parking:  The airport provides daily, hourly and economy parking for more than 6,000 vehicles, including designated parking for persons with disabilities.  Please keep in mind that the first thirty minutes of parking is free at all parking facilities.  If you're dropping off or picking up, feel free to take advantage of this offer.

Cell Phone Waiting Lot:  A cell phone waiting lot can be found at the corner of Airport Blvd. and Northern Blvd.  (If traveling toward the airport, take a left at the first light off Airport Blvd.) The lot offers drivers a free place to park while waiting for their passenger.  Please keep in mind that this service is intended for drivers and not passengers.  All vehicles must remain attended while parked in the waiting lot.

Exit Express: SAT offers an additional feature called “Exit Express.”  Patrons are encouraged to pay for their parking with a credit/debit card before they arrive at their cars.  There are three “Exit Express” locations:

  • Across from Terminal 1 next to the Parking elevator in hourly parking.
  • Terminal 1 tunnel below the baggage claim area.
  • Across the sidewalk next to the hourly lot.

When you leave simply exit through the “Exit Express” toll booth that accepts paid receipts. 

Ground Transportation:  SAT provides a wide range of ground transportation options including:

Rental Cars: Nine rental car agencies with shuttle services to pickup/drop-off centers.

Taxicabs: $20 - $22 to downtown.

Shared-ride shuttles: $18 one-way to downtown, $32 for round-trip.

City bus:  $1.00 to downtown (1 hour scenic route.)

Hotel and on-off-site parking-lot courtesy vehicles.

In-Terminal Passenger Services:  SAT offers its patrons numerous services in both Terminals including a variety of restaurants and gift-shops, as part of the airport’s concession program.  There are also ATMs, computer plug-ins, shoe-shine locations and a chapel located in Terminal 2. 

Federal Inspection Station:  A Federal Inspection Station is located in Terminal 1, which processes non-stop flight arrivals from international destinations.  The station supports operations of the U.S. Dept. of Immigration and Customs Enforcement as well as the U.S. Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.
