Businesses, residents and visitors alike find that San Antonio, Texas is a place where the weather is warm – and the people are warmer. San Antonio is centrally located and affords easy access to cities across the United States, Mexico, Canada, Central America and South America. The eighth largest city in the country, San Antonio’s population of more than one million boasts a bilingual, well-trained and experienced work force. Its economic base is strong and varied – in a state that levies no personal income tax. Most importantly, the quality of life is good, with the cost of living – and doing business – substantially lower than the national average.
The city of San Antonio owns and operates two airports within the city limits: San Antonio International Airport and Stinson Municipal Airport. San Antonio International Airport is located in north central San Antonio, approximately eight miles or 15 minutes from the central business district. It affords easy access to all major freeways crossing the city and is bordered to the east by the Missouri Pacific Railroad line. Covering a total of 2,600 acres, San Antonio International is the primary airport serving the city, encompassing two passenger terminals with 24 gates and averaging 260 daily arrivals and departures. It has a cargo capacity of 170,000 square feet of which 104,000 square feet is within Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) designed facilities. In addition, San Antonio International Airport is served by numerous first-class fixed base operators, as well as many other private contractors, with programs available to businesses located at the airport and throughout the city.
The Southwest Region of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) presented San Antonio International Airport with its “Outstanding Airport Award” for 2001. San Antonio International Airport has received multiple awards from Airport Revenue News (ARN) and Airports Council International – North America for its unique and customer friendly concessions program. For two years in a row, San Antonio International Airport ranked first place for “Best Overall Concessions Program” based on results from the magazine’s 2004 and 2005 Best Concessions Poll. San Antonio International was recognized by J.D. Power and Associates 2004 Global Airport Satisfaction Index Study, released December 6, 2004, as the highest ranking airport in the small airport segment for its overall customer satisfaction. San Antonio International tied for first place with Calgary International Airport of Calgary, Canada. Stinson Municipal Airport is located in south central San Antonio, also approximately 15 minutes from the central business district. Stinson encompasses a total of 300 acres and serves as the primary reliever for general aviation traffic in San Antonio. Its “easy-in-easy out”, via both ground and air, makes Stinson extremely appealing to operators of smaller aircraft who prefer to avoid both the ground and air traffic at the busier International Airport. It is primarily utilized by individuals and private aviation companies. For a historical perspective, Stinson Municipal Airport is listed as the second oldest general aviation airport in continuous operation in the United States. In August 2001, the airport received a Texas Historical Marker. The Texas Department of Transportation Aviation Division named Stinson Municipal Airport “2003 Reliever Airport of the Year.”
