George Whitfield, Jr.

GWhitfield George Whitfield, Jr., was a dedicated employee of the City of San Antonio for over forty years. Although eligible for retirement, he postponed it until the year following the commencement of operations at the Municipal Records Facility, located on Santa Rosa and El Paso to see his dream of a centralized municipal records facility.

Mr. Whitfield has a long history of community service. Elected to the Board of Directors of the City Employees Credit Union in 1969, he served for several years as its Chairman and also as member of the National Association of Credit Union Chairmen. Mr. Whitfield was one of the founders of the San Antonio Chapter of the Association of Records Managers and Administrators (ARMA). He received the ARMA Manager of the Year award in 1982 and the ARMA Lifetime Achievement Award upon retirement in January 2002. Additionally, Mr. Whitfield has donated his time to the Early Learning Institute of San Antonio.

Mr. Whitfield routinely hosted records management tours for local college students who were beginning careers in the records management discipline.

Mr. Whitfield developed records management systems and methods that employed sound records management principles.

Mr. Whitfield was also awarded the City of San Antonio Star Award and the Texas State Library and Archives Commission's Award of Merit in 1982.

On March 28, 2002, the City of San Antonio City Council voted to rename the Municipal Records Facility as the George Whitfield, Jr. Municipal Records Facility. As it had been a career dream of Mr. Whitfield to see a centralized municipal records facility, the naming of the Municipal Records Facility in his honor is indeed a fitting tribute to George Whitfield, Jr.
