City’s Youth Commission in Search of New Members
City Council now accepting applications from interested high school students

High school students who can envision themselves contributing to a team by addressing issues and developing solutions for challenges affecting young people are encouraged to apply for a position on the City of San Antonio’s Youth Commission. The City Council is now accepting applications to fill as many as 13 open positions on the commission.

Youth Commission members work on and contribute to projects such as the Youth Summit, Teens in the Driver’s Seat, Project WORTH, Blue Santa, and Elf Louise. Recently, the commission held its first ever Youth Volunteer of the Year Awards ceremony, recognizing young people who serve others in our community. During the upcoming school year, the commission plans to hold its second annual Youth Volunteer of the Year Awards, work on developing a Youth Crime Watch, educate other youth at the 19th Annual National Youth Crime Prevention Conference and International Forum and assist with other special projects.

Commission members meet once a month, more often if necessary. Staff members with the Department of Community Initiative’s Youth Services Division supervise the meetings and assist the commission. All high school students in good standing who are willing to attend the required meetings are eligible to apply to the Youth Commission. A total of 22 members make up the commission with two representatives from each district appointed by their respective councilperson and two appointed by the mayor at-large. Commission members, with the exception of seniors, serve two-year terms.

Interested high school students should contact Fred Saucedo via e-mail at fsaucedo@sanantonio.gov or visit www.sanantonio.gov/clerk/boards to download an application.
